The purchase price is the smallest number in this whole project. If you only budget for the car, you will run out of money halfway through and end up with a rusting driveway ornament. Here’s the rule: total cost = 2× purchase price. A 2,500€ E46 is really a 5,000€ project. Plan for it up front.
Where the Hidden Costs Actually Go
Beginners budget for parts and forget everything around the parts. That includes:
- Tools — sockets, torque wrench, jack stands, a decent multimeter. One-time cost, but it’s real money on day one.
- Fluids — oil, coolant, brake fluid, gear oil. A full fluid refresh on a car that’s sat for years adds up fast.
- Disposal — old oil, tires, and scrap parts cost money to get rid of properly in Germany. Factor in Wertstoffhof fees.

Don’t default to the first result on a parts site. Cross-check fitment (chassis code + build date) before you buy anything. Scrapyards (Autoverwertung) are dramatically cheaper for anything structural, trim, or electrical that doesn’t wear — subframes, interior panels, control units. Save OEM new-parts budget for wear items: brakes, bushings, belts, and anything safety-critical.
